Take the wheel

Why do we have such a hard time owning things; our fears, decisions and slip-ups?

Seth wrote a blog the other day that really sat with me.

It was short and sweet, as are a lot of his posts.

“Like the pilot says, “sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight.” When you’re on one of those Disneyland boats, it takes you where Disney wants you to go. That’s why you got on. And so you are lulled, a spectator, merely a tourist. So different, isn’t it, from driving yourself, choosing your own route and owning what comes of it?

How long have you been along for the ride?

When is your turn to actually drive?”

Taking ownership of yourself – of your life and actions – is an incredibly empowering thing to do.

It’s respectable and admirable because it’s not easy.

So often, we let others make decisions for us.

So often, we chalk our mistakes up to factors outside of our control.

Doing that prevents us from using our experiences as opportunities for growth.

Doing that prevents us from taking control of our life.

So, the next time you notice yourself being a passerby, snap to it, take the wheel and drive.

  • “Snap to it” – love that. I have moments while “driving” that I think – gosh, it’d be nice if someone else (Disney?) took the wheel for a little bit and let me ride along. It’s in those moments that I have to “snap to it” and remember that’s just my lizard brain talking.
