Embrace expectations

Setting expectations is the only way to achieve goals.

One of Seth’s recent blog posts got me thinking about the power of expectations and why it is critical to create them.

“Expectations aren’t guarantees, but expectations give us the chance to act as if, to trade now for later, to invest in hard work and productive dreaming on our way to making an impact,” Seth says.

Expectations push us towards action and give us drive, determination and enthusiasm to accomplish our goals.

Expectations also help us stay focused.

Expectations help give us the energy and persistence we need to continue the work – especially when it gets hard.

Without expectations, we lose the drive we need to be a change maker.

When an individual loses that drive, their entire network and community suffers as a result.

Instead, we need support and positivity.

“We need teachers and leaders and peers who will help us dig in deeper and discover what’s possible, so we can push to make it likely,” says Seth.

In order to accomplish our wildest dreams, we need the support and encouragement of our community and our closest peers, and the only way to get that support is to give it in return.

Seth truly said it best in his post:

“Expectation depends on support—persistent, generous support to create a place where leaping can occur. If we can help just one person refuse to accept false limits, we’ve made a contribution. If we can give people the education, the tools and the access they need to reach their goals, we’ve made a difference. And if we can help erase the systemic stories, traditions and policies that push entire groups of people to insist on less, we’ve changed the world.”

Let’s start embracing expectations and making this world a better place to connect, to dream, and to leap.
